David Moody, retired McNichols Campus librarian and friend, passed away on June 25, 2022. Moody’s career spanned more than 35 years at the University, but his impact is still felt daily in the library and beyond.
His profession contributions include — but are not limited to — getting Detroit Mercy Libraries holdings listed in an international database used by catalogers worldwide, participation in the construction of the online databases that effectively eliminated the need for the card catalog, and the consolidation of the former Mercy College Library’s holdings with hose of the McNichols Campus Library.
Outside of the library, Moody’s passion was chess. An avid player since childhood, he served as editor for the magazine, Michigan Chess, and was elected to the Michigan Chess Association Hall of Fame.
In his later years, Moody worked tirelessly to create a universal database of chess games, an enterprise that required scrutiny and immense “detective work” that will no doubt be appreciated by future chess players and aficionados.
To honor David’s life and contributions to the University and library world, funds are being raised to dedicate a tree in his name on the McNichols Campus. Please consider visiting the David Moody Tree Dedication page to donate.
