Detroit Mercy, in partnership with Hillsborough Community College (HCC) in Tampa, Fla., is pleased to announce a joint Fulbright-Hays Group Project Abroad (GPA) for curriculum development to Brazil in 2022.
The GPA will consist of 14 total participants, including a project director and a team of world language and area studies educators from each location.
Detroit Mercy’s Lara Wasner will lead six university and K-12 teachers from Detroit, with the goal of creating an opportunity for United States educators to explore meaningful instructional design dedicated to teaching about the Afro-Brazilian diaspora.
Suzanne Lynch of HCC will lead six K-12 and community college educators from Tampa.
Travel to Brazil is scheduled for summer 2022 and will include the cities of Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais and Salvador, Bahia.
The primary objectives of the 2022 GPA are to achieve a thorough understudying of the national and transnational reach of the African-Brazilian diaspora, increase language competency in context and create curriculum that encourages critical engagement and reflection with the Afro-Brazilian culture.
This partnership advances the work of inclusion, builds on a body of work about Brazil that is complementary and purposeful and creates dynamism of teaching and learning for the two institutions who have both led high-caliber Fulbright programs to Brazil in recent years. Detroit Mercy was awarded and administered GPAs to Brazil in 2016 and 2018.
Calls for applications will be released to designated schools and districts in early September.
