The University will celebrate Constitution Day with a variety of activities and events. Constitution Day is Monday, Sept. 17.
Following the University’s Celebrate Spirit event, Students for Politics and Law will be at the Organization Fair Sept. 13 handing out voter registration fliers for interested individuals.
On Friday, Sept. 14, Detroit Mercy’s Black Abolitionist Archive presents, “Robert W. Saunders, Civil Rights, and the Fourteenth Amendment,” a lunch and learn event revolving around Constitution Day. Saunders was a student at Detroit Mercy’s Law School, when he was asked to return to Florida and become field director there for the NAACP. He became “Mr. Civil Rights” in the state between 1952 and 1965 and was involved in many key cases and protests, often endangering his own life. Professor of History Roy E. Finkenbine will present the discussion, which is from noon to 1 p.m. and takes place in the President’s Dining Room in the Student Union.
On Monday, Sept. 17, stop by the McNichols Library and take the Constitution Day Quiz. The Library will give away 25 pocket Constitutions, courtesy of Sen. Debbie Stabenow. In addition,. The Bookmark will feature patriotic treats.
On Tuesday, Sept. 18, Students for Politics and Law will sponsor a table outside of the Library to provide information on voter registration for faculty, staff, students and visitors.
