Ethics Bowl makes post-pandemic return, awarding winners

Detroit Mercy’s Ethics Bowl made its post-pandemic return on Friday, Oct. 20.

Sponsored by the Department of Philosophy, teams gathered in the Student Union to discuss and debate cases connected to ethical issues including the proper balance of protection and liberty for persons with intellectual disabilities, the termination of overly demanding professors, book banning, and the rights of parents to shape curricula. In front of judges drawn from UDM faculty, staff, and off-campus guests, teams presented their moral arguments and critiqued those of their opponents.

The quality of the discussion was high throughout, but by late afternoon the undefeated team Tomato Sandwiches (made up of Political Science majors Isabelle Francis, Kelsie Shammami, Juan Willis and Kaleb Smith) were named winners of the competition.

Conundrum Crusaders (Morgan Rhodes, Cristal Guzman, Gavin Rapuzzi, Colin Graettinger and Liam Gilbert) placed second, after also going undefeated, but also accumulating fewer points than the Tomato Sandwiches. DALC United (Anja Peters, Daniella Samana, Lance Poole and Chloe Wiggins) finished in third.

Tomato Sandwiches will now move on and represent the University at the Regional Ethics Bowl tournament in Chicago next month. Congratulations to all of the teams who came out and made this year’s Ethics Bowl a great one! We look forward to the next installment in 2024!
