Once again this year, we invite all Detroit Mercy faculty and staff to consider accompanying incoming first-year (McNichols Campus) students in the half-day of service that they do as a part of their orientation program in August.
The schedule runs from 8 a.m. for breakfast until 1 p.m. for lunch on Aug. 23-24.
The orientation program is called PTV (Prologues, Transitions and Viewpoints). As part of this program, half of the students do service on Wednesday, Aug. 23 and the other half serve on Thursday, Aug. 24. Faculty and staff can choose whichever day fits best into their schedules, or both days. You do not need to bring anything special, just your desire to accompany our new students in this part of their introduction to Detroit Mercy’s Mission. You may also request to serve at a specific service site or type of work.
This year, most of the groups will be clearing overgrown lots in the Fitzgerald neighborhood just west of the McNichols Campus. Some will do similar work in the Martin Park neighborhood east of campus, on the Southwest side of Detroit, in Palmer Park, or at a retirement home near Marygrove. Some groups will be working at one of two schools (Gesu or Palmer Park Academy) in the neighborhood. Some groups will also assist in the gardens that are affiliated with the Titan Equity Nourish Network (TENN).
If interested, please email Sr. Karen Dunville, RSM, at dunvilmk@udmercy.edu and let her know which day or days you would prefer to work.
Schedule for the day (Wednesday, Aug. 23 and/or Thursday, Aug. 24):
- 8 a.m. — Breakfast (Meet by 8:15 a.m.)
- 8:30 a.m. — Orientation at pre-reflection
- 9:25 a.m. — Departure for sites
