Finkenbine to lead discussion at Native American History Month event, Nov. 16

In honor of Native American History Month, Professor of History and department co-chair Roy E. Finkenbine is set to speak virtually on “An Odawa Oral Tradition about the Underground Railroad.”

The Network to Freedom Program and the Black Abolitionist Archive presentation is set for Tuesday, Nov. 16 at 4 p.m. and features Finkenbine’s discussion, with Odawa and Ojibwa spokespersons offering their comments on the topic.

Finkenbine, the director of the Black Abolitionist Archive at Detroit Mercy, will share his research on this history, highlighting archival and oral source materials, including on the Indigenous role in the Underground Railroad and the importance of Native Americans in that movement.

Advanced registration for the event is required and may be done by visiting nps.gov. Registration closes on Monday, Nov. 15 at 5 p.m. The event is free for all interested participants.
