Vice President for Mission at Mercyhurst University Greg Baker invites all in Mercy to a virtual Earth Day discussion on climate change with Dan Horan, OFM on Thursday, April 22 at 7 p.m. The Sister Maura Smith Earth Day Lecture is titled, “Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Climate Justice: Urgent Explorations of Global Climate Change and the Consistent Ethic of Life.” This event is free and open to the public. Register is required online at mhur.st/earthday.
This year marks the sixth anniversary of Pope Francis’ promulgation of Laudato Si’, the encyclical letter on “Care for our Common Home,” and the 51st anniversary of Earth Day. And yet, when it comes to Catholic attention to important life issues in the United States, global climate change and other ecological crises often fail to rise to the level of concern or attention compare to other prolife subjects. In this presentation, Fr. Daniel draws on the consistent ethic of life principle to show how the Catholic tradition should recognize global climate change as the most important life issue today, for it threatens the very conditions of all life on this planet.
