Saundra McGuire, director emerita of the Center for Academic Success and retired vice chancellor at LSU, will be a guest presenter for a pair of Detroit Mercy virtual events, for both students and staff and faculty. Both are set for Thursday, Feb. 2 via Zoom.
McGuire will provide a professional development opportunity to faculty from 12:45-2:15 p.m. over Zoom with the presentation titled, “Teach STEM Students How to Learn: Metacognition is the Key!”
The second presentation, “Metacognition — The Key to Acing STEM Courses and Excelling in Research!” is set for 5-6:30 p.m. on Feb. 2 and is geared towards students. This session will provide students with an understanding of what metacognition is and how to apply it to improve learning, as well as strategies to excel in research activities.
Students not in a STEM field are more than welcome, as these techniques can be used by any content area.
McGuire has delivered keynote addresses or presented workshops at over 400 institutions in 46 states and 10 countries. Prior to joining LSU, where she was a professor of chemistry, she spent 11 years at Cornell University, where she received the coveted Clark Distinguished Teaching Award.
Both events are co-sponsored by ReBUILDetroit and the College of Health Professions & McAuley School of Nursing.
