Michigan Poet Laureate Nandi Comer will read her work and engage in dialogue about craft and culture with Detroit poet Brittany Rogers at 6 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 12 at University of Detroit Mercy.
The event is free and open to the community. A reception and book signing will precede the event at 5:30 p.m. Thursday. Copies of Comer’s 2020 collection Tapping Out are available for sale at the McNichols Campus bookstore in the lower level of the Student Union.
Comer is the author of American Family: A Syndrome and Tapping Out, which was awarded the 2020 Society of Midland Authors Award and the 2020 Julie Suk Award. She is a Cave Canem Fellow, a Callaloo Fellow and a 2019 Kresge Arts in Detroit Fellow. She is the co-director of Detroit Lit. She was appointed Michigan’s second poet laureate this year.
Rogers is a Detroit poet and educator as well as editor-in-chief for Muzzle Magazine and co-host of the Poetry Foundation’s podcast VS.
The event will be held in Room 114 of the Chemistry Building on Detroit Mercy’s McNichols Campus. It begins with a reception and book signing at 5:30 p.m. and is co-sponsored by Detroit Mercy’s Department of English and College of Liberal Arts & Education.
