For more than 25 years, Detroit Mercy has taken students out of the classroom and into place like the neighborhoods of Detroit, hurricane-ravaged streets of New Orleans, villages of El Salvador and daily lives of migrants in El Paso, Texas. University Ministry reminds the Detroit Mercy community that every penny counts in helping continue this tradition of mission-related service. Service immersion trips educate students about the social issues that create and perpetuate systemic injustice, foster and deepen faith lives, introduce diverse cultures and engage students in direct service. This year, University Ministry is sponsoring the following service immersion trips:
Spring Break Trips
- What Makes a Home – Nazareth Farm, W. Va.
- Hunger and Homelessness – Mystery Trip (location is not disclosed)
- Inclusion and Reimagining Love – Misericordia Home, Chicago
- What’s the Price of a Tomato? Farm Worker Rights – Immakolee, Fla.
Summer Break Trips
- Crispaz – El Salvador
- Mercy Focus on Haiti – Gros Morne, Haiti
Over winter break, 12 students traveled together to El Paso to participate in Project Encuentro. Based on the NIH funded study, “Adaptation and Implementation of Project Encuentro in the U.S.-Mexico Border,” Project Encuentro increases access to HIV testing, creates a peer network of behavioral intervention to reduce sexual and drug-use risk and develops community-wide events targeting structural factors affecting HIV risk.
