Interview with Detroit Mercy Alum and Medical Student Marco Ciavaglia

Detroit Mercy Alum and now Medical Student Marco Ciavaglia stopped by to recall his time as a Titan and to discuss life as a 1st year Medical Student.

You’re learning new things every single day and then your afternoons, you have to study but you have to be involved with extracurriculars…all of that you still have to write down for your CV cause when you go to apply for Residency, its a huge part. So having that time management skill, being able to publicly speak or present yourself to other people; those are all keys to being successful!

Marco had some wonderful memories about being a Detroit Mercy Titan, including spontaneously engaging in Detroit Mercy’s Decade Dash a few years ago!

“One of my fraternity brother and I decided the morning of, saying you want to go run in this and were like I guess so, we could and we missed the start…so we sprinted to try to catch up with all these people and by the time we did that, we were gasping! We were like we can’t do this anymore…then we walked.”

“We had a blast doing that!”

When asked what graduate school has been like during the pandemic, the Alum explains that he’s in medical school in a rural area, where there is not a lot to get into.

“I’m kind of in a rural area so you wouldn’t even know COVID was a thing; were like in a bubble.”

“Its a lot harder here to get distracted and to get things done.

Marco credits his time at Detroit Mercy in helping him to develop and succeed in Medical school. From his time being a Biology student to being an member of a Fraternity; he found that he was prepared not only academically but socially as well.

“Physiology with Grabowski overly prepared me for this. His class was harder than what were doing here. It makes this like a breeze right now cause I already know how to do these things, I learned it!

“So academically, everything at the time it seemed like man this sucks, I don’t like this, why is this so difficult? Now looking at it, its like wow, this is easy!”

“Greek life, it really pushes you to get involved, teach you time management skills, that’s an essential part now.”

Marco Ciavaglia graduated from Detroit Mercy in 2019 and is now a Medical Student at University of Pikeville-Kentucky College of Osteopathic Medicine of Osteopathic Medicine.

Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine creates Doctors, Dentists, Physician Assistants and Biomedical Scientists

“It doesn’t really, honestly matter where you go to college, it matters what type of person you are to take advantage of what you have”

Detroit Mercy Pre-Health Coordinator and Advisor had the opportunity to speak with Director of Student Affairs, Jamie Murphy, M.S. to discuss the many programs at Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine (LECOM) and opportunities available for an array of students. This interview was so informative that we decided to provide six reasons to view the video on LECOM!

1). You want a 1 year master’s program to prepare you for medical or dental school. LECOM provides a Master’s of Medical Science program that prepares students for Medical and Dental School. The program is 10 months that provides the same pace as medical school but not as much material. What is also awesome about this program is that it is taught by Medical School Faculty so students will become familiar with the faculty they will have once they enroll into the Medical School.

“Rather than taking a gap year, we feel students are much better prepared going directly into the med school from this program.”

“We took 84 people last year into our Med School from the Masters!”

2).  You are a Physician Assistant that may want a fast track to becoming a Doctor. LECOM provides a Bridge Program for practicing Physician Assistance!

“So if someone is already a practicing PA and want the autonomy of being a physician, we offer an accelerated program!”

3).  You are interested in one of their 3 Pharmacy doctoral programs: 4 year PharmD, 3 year PharmD, Online PharmD. The three year, accelerated PharmD program is located at Lake Erie campus and the four year PharmD program is located at LECOM’s Florida Campus. The online PharmD program is a four year program.

4). You want to learn about their exciting Dental Program located in Florida. LECOM has a Dental School as well! The school have 105 seats! The students from the Master’s program can also go to the Dental school after successful completion of the program.  These students are required to take the DAT. This program is located on the same campus as the PharmD programs.

5). You are interested in attending United States’ largest medical school with 4 total campuses in Florida, Pennsylvania and the newest in New York

“Our med school, were the biggest, were the largest med school in the country. We get the most applications of any med school!”

6). You are interested in Early Acceptance Program for the Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine applying as a high school student, college freshman or sophomore. Detroit Mercy is an affiliated undergraduate campus with LECOM for the DO program. What does this means? This means that if you are a part of this program, there is a reservation for a seat at LECOM for you!

“The whole purpose of the Early Acceptance Program was to establish relationship with students from their senior year of high school all the way to coming into the doors here”

Interview with Detroit Mercy Alum, Dr. Brittney Kittrell, DDS

Detroit Mercy Alum Dr. Brittney Kittrell joined us to share her road to becoming a practicing Dentist and memories of being a Titan!

“A memory I have from UDM is when I did research with Dr. Tracy-Bee…I did research with her throughout my undergraduate career and it was very rewarding, very exciting.”

Beyond graduating from Detroit Mercy, Dr. Kittrell obtained a Master’s in Medical Science from Hampton University. When asked how this particular degree enhanced her career, Dr. Kittrell states that this program strengthen her science skills which ultimately prepared her for the DAT

“Whatever work you put into the program, that’s what you’re going to get out of it.”

Dr. Kittrell offers advise to current freshmen who are considering a career in Dentistry!

“If you are a current freshmen, I will say start shadowing a Dentist now to see if you really want to do it. Things look glamorous when you haven’t done them. Start shadowing now so you can have an idea of what it will look like once you get into Dentist School and beyond.”

Also make yourself well-rounded. Yes, grades are  important but that’s not the end all, be all…join different organizations, volunteer at different places… ask questions to those who are doing exactly what you want to do so you can get a real world understanding of what Dentistry is.”

Dr. Brittney Kittrell, DDS graduated from Detroit Mercy in 2010 with a Bachelor of Science in Biology and received her Doctorate of Dental Surgery from Meharry Medical College School of Dentistry. Dr. Kittrell is now a practicing Dentist at Northeast Ohio Neighborhood Health Services, INC.
