University of Detroit Mercy, through the Language & Cultural Training program, reached the end of its second grant cycle with the Fulbright Hays Group Project Abroad to Brazil.

Programming in phase one included intensive Portuguese language instruction and cultural immersion on the McNichols Campus. Phase two took participants to Brazil for collaborative learning and immersion, studying multiple perspectives of African experiences in northeast Brazil. Additionally, participants in the program created curriculum projects that enhanced scholarship, teaching and learning of African-American experiences following the trans-Atlantic slave trade.

The grant’s total of $184,000 allowed the University to administer this program over two years. Awardees included 10 faculty, representing College of Liberal Arts & Education, School of Architecture and College of Health Professions, as well as 17 K-12 social science and arts educators from Detroit area schools.
