Leading mosque members at nearby Masjid Wali Muhammad will reflect on more than 80 years of their experiences in a free virtual panel, “Muslim Pioneers in Detroit.”
The free virtual panel is set for Wednesday, April 6 at 5 p.m.
Moderated by Katie Merriman, assistant professor of Religious Studies, panelists — including Imam Tauheed Rashad — will reflect experiences in the original Nation of Islam mosque, including the first Sister Clara School, the ministry of Malcolm X, a new beginning under Imam W.D. Mohammad, and sustaining a do-for-self African American Muslim community in the 21st century.
Masjid Wali Muhammad is the oldest continuous African American Muslim community in Detroit since 1930.
The event is being sponsored by the Islamic Studies Program, African American Studies Program and Department of Religious Studies.
