New grant for history majors and minors to travel to India

Detroit Mercy’s History Department and College of Liberal Arts & Education have created a new grant specifically for history majors and minors, who would like to participate in Detroit Mercy’s International Experience in India in May 2023.

Students will enroll in “Topics in World History: India, culture and encounters 1600-1647,” a directed reading course taught by Diane Robinson-Dunn, in the winter semester of 2023.

Students will then travel to India with Detroit Mercy in May of 2023. While there, they will experience India’s famous “Golden Triangle” or the cities of New Delhi, Agra and Jaipur, where they will be accompanied by local expert guides who will share their insights into the region and their knowledge of the historically and culturally significant sites that they’ll be visiting.

After returning home, grant recipients will create a brief presentation in which they share what they learned from their experience, with particular emphasis on the relationship between studying a region’s history and then traveling to that part of the world. That presentation will then be shared with a history class or classes during the 2023-24 academic year.

For questions or to request a grant application, please contact Robinson-Dunn by email at robinsod@udmercy.edu.

Deadline to submit a grant application is Nov. 15, 2022.

Students will be notified about being awarded and the amount in mid-December of 2022. Funds will be disbursed in January of 2023 and enrollment in the course is confirmed.
