New book celebrates Detroit church, Jesuits

A book cover featuring a photo of Ss. Peter and Paul Church, with text reading Detroit's Oldest Church.Ss. Peter and Paul Church — and its place in Detroit history and with the Jesuits — is the subject of a new book by local author Patricia Montemurri.

Published by Arcadia Publishing, “Ss. Peter and Paul Jesuit, Detroit’s Oldest Church,” tells of the church’s construction in 1844. It was entrusted to the Jesuits in 1877 and has a long commitment to service to those in need. It also is the site of many Detroit Mercy traditions such as the annual Detroit Mercy Law Red Mass.

A former Detroit Free Press reporter, Montemurri has also written histories of Gesu Catholic Church and Michigan’s Mercy High School.

The book is part of the Images of America series of local historical books and can be purchased at ssppjesuit.org/175years. Purchases made at this link (use the link below) will help support the church.
