Award-winning journalist Karla Rivas with Radio Progreso in Honduras will be the guest speaker at a special Carney Latin American Solidarity Archive (CLASA) event on Thursday, April 20 at 12:45 p.m. in the Student Union Ballroom.
A virtual option is also available to those who cannot attend.
Rivas’ talk will focus on violence against women, both domestic violence and political violence. She will tell the audience about the human rights situation in contemporary Honduras, with an emphasis on the impact of systemic violence on women and children.
The radio station Rivas works for is run by a Honduran Jesuit, Padre Melo, and focuses on peace and justice issues in Honduras. It’s one of Honduras’ few independent radio stations. Rivas was the first woman to win the Mackler award for her Courageous and Ethical Journalism.
The talk is in honor of the 40th anniversary of the disappearance of Fr. James “Guadalupe” Carney and is the first of two talks on April 20 hosted by CLASA at the University.
