All members of the Detroit Mercy community — students, faculty, staff, administrators, alumni, friends and family — are welcome to attend “In Our Own Voice,” from the National Alliance on Mental Illness on Thursday, March 2.
The event will be held from 6:30-8 p.m. inside the Chemistry Building, Room 114. It’s hosted by the McAuley School of Nursing and supported by a Mission Micro Grant.
“In Our Own Voice” is a unique public education program developed by NAMI, in which two trained speakers share compelling personal stories about living with mental illness and achieving recovery. The speakers take their audience on a journey discussing their dark days, acceptance, treatment, coping skills and successes, hopes and dreams.
IOOV is an opportunity for those who have struggled with mental illness to gain confidence and share their individual experiences of recovery while raising awareness and reducing stigma in their communities.
Audience members are encouraged to offer feedback and ask questions following the conclusion of the presentation. The event is an excellent opportunity to create awareness and de-stigmatize mental health conditions through hearing about experiences from individuals living with a mental illness.
Attendance tickets will be provided to students who attend.
