University of Detroit Mercy is observing International Education Week by hosting several virtual events Nov. 16-19.
The week starts with a public webinar remembering the 31st anniversary of the Jesuit martyrs of El Salvador, followed by several events developed for Detroit Mercy students and employees.
“This is a time to spark curiosity about various cultures, languages, and traditions, but also to learn what it truly means to be a global citizen,” said Lily Swan, director of Detroit Mercy’s International Services Office, which is sponsoring the programs with the Language and Cultural Training Program “Now more than ever, we must come together in peace and kindness so we may understand how international education positively impacts our lives.”
Monday, Nov. 16
Commemorating the UCA Jesuit Martyrs of El Salvador and launching the “Vamos a la Milpa” project
7-9 p.m.
On Nov. 16, 1989, six Jesuit priests, their housekeeper and her daughter were murdered at the University of Central America in San Salvador, El Salvador. On the 31st anniversary of their martyrdom, Joseph Mulligan, S.J., of Nicaragua, talks about the significance of the recent conviction levied against a former Salvadoran colonel for the murders. Padre Melo, S.J., of Honduras will also speak on his new social justice project, “Vamos a la Milpa,” and Detroit Mercy community members will dramatically read the words of the Jesuit martyrs.

Beyond the H-1B Employment Visa Workshop with the Center for Career & Professional Development

Students can learn more about viable and lawful options to work in the U.S. after optional practical training, as well as other work employment visas outside of the H-1B, in this virtual workshop, presented by immigration attorney Art Serratelli of Serratelli Mijal PLLC.

Peace Corps and Fulbright presentation
12:30-2 p.m.
The Peace Corps and Fulbright U.S. Student Program provides opportunities for students to not only see the world, but also have a global impact. This session examines both U.S. government-sponsored programs that students may consider after graduating from Detroit Mercy.
