In 2017, Joseph Zalke ’60 returned to University of Detroit Mercy’s McNichols Campus for the first time in 50 years. While he came back to share his passion and experience with students in the College of Business Administration, he found himself enriched by the visit. Since that time, Zalke has strengthened his relationship with the University in many ways and solidified it with a $1-million gift to the Student Union renovations. The student lounge on the garden level will be named in his honor.
The University of Detroit Mercy Student Union was built in 1955, expanded in 1970, and this time-lapse video shows the major renovation and expansion begun in November 2020 and completed in August 2022.
University of Detroit Mercy will hold a Grand Opening & Blessing of the institution’s new Student Union on Monday, Sept. 12, at 4 p.m. This event takes place at the McNichols Campus, located in Northwest Detroit. Community members and the media are invited to this special event.
